That moment in the beach resort when you hear waves crashing even before you check in? Nothing beats it. And there is nothing that kills it faster than discovering somewhere over the Atlantic that your swimsuit is perched on the chair by your bedroom back at home. Packing for a beach holiday must be one of the easiest things. It rarely is. Someone either takes too much or has real trouble forgetting something necessary. And sometimes both in the same piece.
The question is how to pack for a beach vacation?
I packed six ensembles on one of my beach holidays. Six. A week later, I hardly wore three of them at all and repeatedly kept grabbing for my same comfy ones: shorts, 1 bathing suit, and sandals that had been in the outfit rotation. Everything else came home unworn. That trip, more so than any packing list ever could, taught me one big lesson about how to pack.
Think Before You Start Throwing Things In
Five minutes of actual thinking before you open the suitcase makes everything easier.
- How to pack for a vacation to the beach?
- How many days are you staying?
- Are you mostly at the resort or are there excursions planned?
- Any water sports on the itinerary?
- Does anywhere have a dress code for dinner?
- Is laundry available while you’re there?
And those answers do precisely that; they tell you what to bring and even more so, what not to bring. Your luggage should reflect the trip you are taking, not some fictionalized version in which you go to five formal dinners.
How To Pack For A Beach Vacation
Shoes, Four Pairs Maximum
Which is where most people lose track. Beach and pool flip-flops. Very flexible walking sandals for everything else throughout the day. Lace-up shoes for travel days or activity with real walking. Dinner is then just a pair of dress sandals or casual shoes if necessary.
That’s it. All possibilities you could encounter at a beach resort are covered with four pairs. The fifth pair in your wish list doesn’t need to be arrived at.
Sun Protection, The Non-Negotiable Category
As with this one over a few years ago at a Caribbean resort, where we hoped to leave the beach early but were drawn by how nice it felt with that fresh wind in the sun. Thought to cool everything else down, sunscreen could skip; it is hardly that hot. Paid with sunburns that lasted the entire trip, turning every shower into a torture session.
Sunscreen goes in first now. Every time. Before anything else gets packed.
The full list:
- Reef-safe sunscreen and enough of it
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunglasses that actually block UV
- Wide-brim hat or cap
- Aloe vera gel for if it all goes wrong anyway
- Lightweight rash guard for long water days
The Beach Bag, Your Daily Grab and Go
A dedicated beach bag packed the night before means you’re out the door and at the pool within minutes every morning.
What goes in it:
- Beach towel if the resort doesn’t provide them
- Reusable water bottle
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Book or Kindle
- Portable speaker
- Snacks for the day
- Wet bag for wet swimsuits
- Cooling towel for genuinely hot days
- Beach blanket if you like having your own space
One bag, everything you need, grab it and go.
Toiletries Without Overdoing It
Many resorts provide basics, but your specific products are worth bringing because generic hotel shampoo does unpredictable things to hair.
The actual essentials:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body wash
- Razor
- Hairbrush
- Deodorant
- Moisturizer, skin dries out faster in sun and salt water
- Face cleanser
- Makeup if you use it
- Hair ties
- Contact lenses and solution if needed
- Prescription medications, more than you think you need in case of delays
Travel-sized versions where possible. They save significant luggage space.
Electronics, Only What You’ll Actually Use
Not every device you own. Not the laptop you’ll tell yourself you might work on. What you actually use on holiday.
- Phone charger
- Portable power bank because beach days drain batteries fast
- Camera if you use one beyond your phone
- All relevant charging cables
- Smartwatch charger
- Headphones
- Travel adapter for international trips
- E-reader
- Small extension cord if you’re traveling with several devices
Hotel rooms consistently have fewer plug sockets than any reasonable person would expect. The extension cord sounds excessive until the first night you need it.
Documents, Sort These Before Anything Else
Keep everything together in one travel wallet you don’t have to dig through bags to find:
- Passport or ID
- Hotel reservation confirmation
- Flight tickets
- Travel insurance details
- Cards and some cash for tips and small purchases
- Emergency contact information written down physically
Save digital copies on your phone as well. Not instead of the physical ones. Both.
How To Pack For A 7 Day Beach Vacation
Three swimsuits, three or four shorts, five T-shirts, two evening outfits, two cover-ups, two dresses, one pair of sandals, one pair of trainers, one pair of flip-flops, two sleepwear sets, eight pairs of underwear; one hat, sunglasses, a beach bag.
So that gives you about a week’s worth of clothes without the suitcase feeling like it has your whole house in it.
How To Pack Light For A Beach Vacation
Spending most of your time near a body of water, comfort is everything. Fabrics that are lightweight, fast-drying, and also do not have you sweating on them by 10 am.
What actually gets used:
- 2 or 3 swimsuits, as wet ones require drying time
- It’s so simple to throw a lightweight cover-up on for the distance from the pool to wherever,
- Tank tops and breathable t-shirts
- Shorts in neutral colors that go with everything
- Daytime friendly sundresses and some for easy casual evenings
- A linen shirt or two
- A somewhat nicer casual evening outfit
- A light sweater or cardigan, since the resort air-conditioning is brutal
- Sleepwear, undergarments, a couple of socks
Everything is a neutral color so everything just mixes and matches without thinking.
What People Consistently Forget
Phone charger. Sunscreen. Prescription medication. Sunglasses. Portable charger. Cover-up. Lip balm. Waterproof phone case. Nail clippers. Laundry bag.
Having a saved checklist on your phone that you actually consult before leaving fixes this permanently.
Before You Close the Suitcase
Take three things out. Whichever three you’d miss least. You almost certainly don’t need them and your back will thank you at the airport.
Packing well for a beach holiday isn’t about fitting the most in. It’s about bringing the right things so you can spend the actual trip swimming and eating and lying in the sun rather than managing a suitcase full of stuff you’re not using. Hope you got all your answers related to how to pack for a beach vacation.
Light bag. Right things. Enjoy the trip.
