China’s $1 bn apparel export loss exposes margin squeeze

China’s HS 61–62 apparel exports fell 2 per cent to $50.23 billion in January–May 2026, with woven clothing accounting for the decline.
Knitwear remained resilient as exports shifted towards the US, Russia and Brazil.
Despite higher shipment volumes, apparel manufacturers faced severe pressure, with January–May profit margins at just 2.61 per cent.
